If you have been paying attention, all major newspapers, TV news, and major press websites said that Covid-19 virus invades through our eyes, nose and mouth, which are the main paths getting into our body. That’s the reason why we are advised not to touch our eyes, nose and mouth unless it’s necessary.
But, here comes the question. Those who wear contact lenses insert and remove contact lenses at least 1-2 times a day. Logical thinking, is it better not to wear it then?
Let’s discuss about this topic today…
Researchers around the world have investigated the possibility of viral transmission through the ocular mucus membranes, tears and conjunctiva. From the research it was found that there is no clear evidence which shows that contact lens wearers at an increased risk of exposure to Covid-19.
The research did find that Covid-19 virus exists in the conjunctival sac of infected patients, but there is insufficient concrete evidence to show that the virus sticks to the surface of contact lenses and then spreads through the conjunctival route.
On the other hand, some people think that spectacles can provide better protection than contact lenses in terms of preventing Covid-19 virus from seeping through. But do you know that spectacles are made of metal and plastic, and contact lenses are made of hydrogel or a mixture of hydrogel and silicone. Research shows that Covid-19 can survive on metal and plastic surfaces for up to nine days, but only up to five days on silicone rubber. Having said that, which do you think is safer?
Actually, wearing contact lenses is not a problem. What you really need to do is to maintain your own hygiene and maintain the correct hand washing habits at all times. Wash your hands frequently and rub your hands for at least 20 seconds.
Those who wear contact lenses should disinfect contact lenses every night and follow the manufacturer’s hygiene and care instructions. If you are sick, stop wearing contact lenses. This recommendation is valid for any type of sickness, not limited to Covid-19 virus.
That’s it for today, let’s continue to protect ourselves and families. Remember to keep a distance of more than 2 meters away from people whenever possible, and go straight home after settling all important matters when you are out. Don’t wander around.
Keep going, everyone! We will WIN against this epidemic!
